A few card approvals and data points

So I'm 23 and opened my first card about two years ago which was the Capital One Platinum, they gave me a $500 limit I maxed it out every month for 6 months then got an upgrade to the Quicksilver with an automatic CLI to $3,600. Since then I haven't opened any new credit accounts or loans until last month. My income isn't the greatest since I'm working retail while I go back to college for a career change. I also don't pay any rent just an auto loan.

#1. Navy Federal More Rewards Credit Card, did the "overnight" method but I don't think it really made any difference. Applied around 11 PM and got the under review email, few hours later approval for $18,000 SL. 0 new accounts in 2 years, 0 inquiries in 2 years, and oldest credit line was about 2 years at the time of approval. Pulled TU, about a 753 score at the time. I have also been aa member of Navy Federal for about 2 or 3 years but hadn't really used the account up until then.

#2. Capital One Savor One, I had been getting the "pre-approved" message from Capital One for a few months for this card but hadn't pulled the trigger yet. I'm starting to get intrigued about credit so I said why not and applied. Got the in review email and got approved a few hours later, but only with a $500 SL A few card approvals and data points (3). Decent card though so I'll just try my Capital One method and max out the card for the first 6 months to see if they automatic CLI again. Pulled all three bureaus, 653 (Experian) - 753 (TransUnion) 757 (Equifax).

#3. Chase Ink Business Cash Card, Stepping my feet into the business world and wanted a decent "funding" vehicle to help without having to dump all of my personal money in at once. Also wanted to get in and start my relationship with Chase so I went for it. At this time no new accounts had reported yet and I had about 4 inquiries. 648 (Experian) - 743 (TransUnion) 747 (Equifax) . They sent me an email saying thanks for applying, be in touch soon. I called and the automated system told me they'll contact me in 2 weeks. Waited a few days and called the automated system again and it changed to 7-10 days. Waited a few more days and still nothing so I called and spoke to an actual person and they needed me to send a document proving I own my business and proof of business name. Submitted the documents and after about 3 more days I got the approval. $3,500 SL, not the best but probably enough for my business at the moment. Applied with EIN, have an actual registered LLC.

#4. Chase Sapphire Preffered, This was the last card I've been approved for so far, recently owed Chase $60 in overdraft fees I forgot about; while apping for the business card I got scared this might affect the decision so I paid it. Once I paid it I received access back into my Chase login and seen a bunch of pre-approvals, this card being one of them. I had also received a pre-approval offer in the mail for the 90,000 bonus points offer. As I said before I wanted to get in with a big bank when it comes to credit cards other than Cap One and Navy Federal and since I had a Chase business card now I said why not get a personal as well. Decent card with decent point catagories I buy within. I used the QR code from the mail offer to apply and application went into review, long story short I called the recon line after a few days of nothing and went through some verification, the rep came back after a while and told me I was approved for a $5,000 SL; pretty sure that's the standard limit but I'm happy with it at the moment. 648 (Experian) - 743 (TransUnion) 747 (Equifax). They pulled Experian and TransUnion. At the time 2 accounts had also reported, my Navy Federal card as well as an auto loan from Navy Federal that I got approved for after the credit card approval.

Current scores: Experian: 648, TransUnion: 718, Equifax: 720

About 3 inquiries on Experian, 6 on TransUnion, and 3 on Equifax.

I had also apped for a few credit cards during this little "spree" that I hadn't got approved for. Citi Strata and US Bank Cash Business Card. Also tried for a Apple Card that I got declined for because I forgot to unfreeze my reports, haven't tried again. Also get declined for PayPal LOC, which I probably didn't need anyway.

If you have any questions let me know, also if you have any advice for me please reply with some; I'm pretty new to credit and would appreciate it.

Re: A few card approvals and data points

First and foremost, congratulations on all of your approvals! But my advice would be as follows:

There are so many other folks on this board who can chime in and lend some assistance, but there were a couple of things you mentioned that made me a little nervous:

______________________________________________________________

@Llamawrote:

It's great to be intrigued! But research is key. The "why not" approach gives me the impression that beyond receiving the "pre-approved" message from Capital One, that you may have not have completed enough research to compare this one to others that are available from other issuers that may have given you a more flexible starting limit to begin with. (Feel free to correct me though if that take is not accurate!). The last thing I'd want, is for you to build your foundation on cards that you might potentially end up sock-drawering later on because they're not growing with you.

#3. Chase Ink Business Cash Card, Stepping my feet into the business world and wanted a decent "funding" vehicle to help without having to dump all of my personal money in at once. Also wanted to get in and start my relationship with Chase so I went for it. "....so far...." no new apps! Lol.

Did you have 2 overdraft fees with Chase to total $60? You mentioning paying them up because you were scared that it would negatively affect their decision on your application, feels like that without the application, you may not have taken care of them so quickly. But perhaps it's the case that your application brought light to the overdraws when you realized that you couldn't login; the assumption being that you don't use the account much to have been aware of them otherwise. I'd turn on some of their notification features for alerts to stay on top of everything with them moving forward; if for nothing else than to stay on top of making sure that you nip any potential fraudulent activity in the bud, quickly.

I'm not sure what your timeline was for all of these applications; (same week, same month, etc), but to apply for this many in such a short space of time is extremely aggressive, (in my opinion). I would definitely take on@SouthJamaica's advice to relax on applying for any new products right now, and let your accounts age.

That, and I'd ask for you to be more strategic in your approach to future products; applying for a PayPal LOC that you probably "didn't need anyway" may not have been the best idea. Your profile is off to a great start! So use the setup you currently have to its maximum potential and prime yourself to be in a great spot to be approved for whatever your heart desires for you and your business in the future to help you grow.

If you have any questions let me know, also if you have any advice for me please reply with some; I'm pretty new to credit and would appreciate it.

______________________________________________________________

So to conclude, being responsible is key! You mention that your income isn't the greatest so be mindful so as not to overspend on any of your cards; and set aside for a rainy day fund if you can to minimize running them up if you have an emergency. You mention going BACK to college, so if you haven't had to deal with student loans in the past, and plan to for your return to academia, be aware that the interest rates on your loans could eat you alive without assistance or a strategy to aggressively pay them down.

Your credit history is still very young, so when applying for cards, ask yourself if it's a card that you could potentially live with forever as your average age will be foundationally rooted by your first few. And avoid annual fee cards that can't be downgraded to a card that does NOT have one in the event that the perks of those premium cards no longer compliment your normal spending habits. And lastly, create a plan or process to stay on top of payments and due dates to eliminate overdraft fees, and lates on any of your credit products, to avoid being haunted by them for 7+ years after that. Being late on any of those products, and letting your score take a dive, could adversely affect your limit and ability with your other issuers as well when they pull soft checks on ya to to reevaulate your profile in consideration for increases, (or decreases).

But that's it for my 2 cents. Best of luck to ya as your accounts age and your business grows.

Good luck! And best wishes.

Re: A few card approvals and data points

I could not be anymore confused right now, guys.....

Left a fairly lengthy post just a short bit ago that probably took me 30 minutes to put together, and now it's vanished.

Any guesses? Is there a glitch? What the heck! Didn't break any forum rules that I can think of, so I'm not sure what gives.

If anyone received a "copy" of the post by e-mail, then let me know so that I may repost it; otherwise, I'll have to back it up in a word document in the future or something to prevent wasting effort like that. A bummer for sure.

Context: returned to add an update to it when I noticed that it wasn't there anymore.

Thanks, all.

You've done well. Now you should let the passage of time work its magic.

Thank you for the congrats and leaving me some advice! Yeah, I'm gonna just wait at least another two years and enjoy the new cards I have. At first I kind of had the approval rush but thanks to you guys I'm gonna chill and just let them grow. Thanks again!

First and foremost, congratulations on all of your approvals! But my advice would be as follows:

There are so many other folks on this board who can chime in and lend some assistance, but there were a couple of things you mentioned that made me a little nervous:

@Llamawrote:

Got the in review email and got approved a few hours later, but only with a $500 SL A few card approvals and data points (112). Decent card though so I'll just try my Capital One method and max out the card for the first 6 months to see if they automatic CLI again. Pulled all three bureaus, 653 (Experian) - 753 (TransUnion) 757 (Equifax).

Thank you for your advice man this was great and detailed! I truly appreciate this love and advice! Honestly you are correct beyond a little research I did on this forum and Reddit with people saying the Savor One is one of the better Capital One cards, I hadn't really researched any other cards and just jumped on it because of the preapproval mostly.

As for the Chase account, I had been receiving mail about the overdraft fees and once again you're correct, the main reason I didn't push them to the side again and worry about it later was because of the app. If it weren't for me applying I probably would have waited a couple more months to finally come around and pay it off; since I had no real need to bank with Chase until now. Yes notifications is very important reminder since that's the reason my Experian score tanked so much, missed the last payment on an Affirm loan for some computer parts I bought that I had the money for; just completely forgot to pay it. It's funny because I could have just bought the parts flat out but wanted to build my credit so I used Affirm instead, ended up hurting my score instead lol.

The first applications were within the same month about a few weeks apart (June), the Sapphire card I applied for a few weeks ago in July. Yeah, I kind of felt it was pretty aggressive as well but I thought since I hadn't applied for new cards in 2 years it wouldn't be so bad. Thanks to your advice, my next applications are definitely gonna either make since within some plan, or be for my business. Thank you so much again! Gonna let these grow for a while now.
